The pixel-art project was by far one of the most entertaining drawings up to this point. It’s like drawing and painting at the same time. The good thing is that I had to use graph paper. The bad thing? I had to use graph paper π . I mean, I had to count squares and calculate shades of blue all the time. That was somewhat tedious, but it was also quite liberating. If I followed the patterns correctly -and if I painted them carefully- I should be able to get a good result. It was a work of patience and endurance!
As a rule of thumb, I tried to start with very light blue. Throughout this project, I never erased lines. For that reason, I needed to get it right on the first try. Or, at least, not getting wrong! The safest way to avoid messing it up was to start lightly and cover the darker squares only when I was super sure about what I was doing. That was helpful!
Between Days 72 and 76 I worked on the pixel-art portrait. I’m not sure who the actor is, but sure enough, he’s quite famous π. I like to think he’s just Elvis Presley (who was also an actor!). Before getting to Day 76 I got my smartphone approval. While shooting the practice pictures, my Google Pixel suggested switching the camera to Portrait Mode π. That was a good sign indeed! If even the phone could recognize that was a face, I was on the right track.
Day 77 was an experiment on mixed media. I was supposed to use a photo, take a part out, and complete the rest with my pen (adding a wacky twist). I used pictures of a bunch of grapes and half of a pen. The other half of Day 77 and the entire Day 78 I did some doodles based on the themes of the book. This was a preparation for the freehand drawing on a screen I was going to do the following week.
Week 11 Drawings
Below you can find the daily drawings. Each day, I’m practicing for an hour. Sometimes, I fill one or two pages. But there are days when I work on more detailed stuff, and maybe it’s just half a page π. As soon as I reach the one-hour mark, I put the pen down and take the photo of the day.
